Fort Stevens With My Dad
My Dad was in town recently. He grew up in DC and it's always fun for me to ride around with him. He shows me new places--old haunts for him, sometimes in bad neighborhoods now.
So, this time we cruised his old hood, his old houses and their alleys. We cruised his alma maters: Brightwood Elementary, Paul Junior High, and Coolidge. One place he showed me from his grammar school days was Fort Stevens.
After the British sailed up the Potomac in 1812 and burned the White House, a series of forts were constructed to protect the capital before the Civil War, Fort Stevens being one of them. I guess my dad used to play there with his friends back in the early 50's.
It still remains, in a sketch neighborhood at 13 and Quackenbos, complete with cannons dug into the hillside.
